About the survey
The Norwegian Directorate of Health is conducting a national survey among adult patients who have received inpatient mental health care.
The purpose is to identify patients’ experiences of inpatient mental health care. The findings may contribute to improved services for patients.
The survey forms part of the Norwegian Directorate of Health’s work on national user and patient experience surveys. The survey will help us to monitor the quality of services and help identify variations within and across health authorities and regions.
Who may be invited?
The survey is aimed at adult patients (aged 18 years or older) who have received inpatient mental health care within the specialist health service.
Invitations are issued on an ongoing basis to patients who have recently been discharged. Each patient will be invited only once during the study period.
What will we ask about?
The survey looks at patients’ experiences of inpatient mental health care.
Topics include:
- the treatment you received
- contact with staff
- information and communication
- opportunities to contribute towards your own treatment
- safety and the clinical environment
- perceived benefits of the stay
- self-assessed mental and physical health
- quality of life
You can also provide comments in free-text fields.
The survey is based on questions and measurement instruments that have previously been tested and used in surveys on patient experiences with mental health care.
How is the survey conducted?
Invitations are issued electronically via Helsenorge.
If you have been invited, you can access the survey after logging in to Helsenorge. If you do not respond, you may receive up to four reminders.
Participation is voluntary.
If you need help responding to the survey, you are welcome to get help from a relative or someone else you trust. You can also use the representation solution in Helsenorge to respond to the survey.
How are the results used?
Responses are analysed and presented at group level so that no individuals can be identified.
Results are used to:
- monitor the quality of mental health care
- compare results between health authorities and regions and at national level
- provide a basis for administration and quality improvements
Who is responsible for the survey?
The Norwegian Directorate of Health is responsible for the survey.
