Andel småcellet lungekreft (SCLC) har gått tilbake, sammenliknet med ikke-småcellet lungekreft, og utgjør ca. 15-19 % av all lungekreft (Sagerup, Småstuen, Johannesen, Helland, & Brustugun, 2011). SCLC presenterer seg langt oftere med spredning på diagnosetidspunktet enn annen lungekreft. På diagnosetidspunktet har omlag 35 % begrenset og 65 % utbredt sykdom. Tilstanden oppfattes ved diagnose som systemisk sykdom, uavhengig av stadium. TNM klassifikasjon skal i dag brukes rutinemessig (Vallieres et al., 2009). Dog er betegnelsene begrenset sykdom (limited stage, LS) og utbredt sykdom (extensive stage, ES) fortsatt i bruk i internasjonale retningslinjer siden det er denne inndelingen som først og fremst har betydning for valg av behandling.
