Kapittel 5 Adaptation to the Norwegian health and care services

For a generative language model to be used safely and effectively in Norwegian health and care services, it should be well-adapted to Norwegian conditions. In this chapter, we will look at what adaptation of language models to Norwegian conditions entails, how language models can be adapted to Norwegian conditions, what is needed to adapt language models to Norwegian conditions, and who can adapt the language models.

This report does not address general adaptation to Norwegian conditions in detail, such as language in Norway or general public administration and knowledge about social conditions and values but focuses primarily on adaptation to the Norwegian health and care services. In the general public domain, we will seek cross sectoral collaborations.

Adapting to Norwegian conditions does not exclude that the language model should also be adapted to international conditions. Health and care services are provided in an international context, and health professional knowledge and innovations occur internationally. A language model should not be adapted to Norwegian conditions alone.

Large language models can be components in AI systems. AI systems can build on one or more different language models and usually have an intended area of use.
